PRESS RELEASE - May 8, 2024 - Town of Belgrade

The Town of Belgrade Calls Special Town Meeting for May 22

Town seeks support for construction of new fire station

The Town of Belgrade Board of Selectpersons has called a Special Town Meeting seeking support for the construction of a new fire station. Voters will be asked to support a 25% match of federal grant funds that the town has applied for through Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS).

Due to an aging volunteer roster, decrease in active volunteerism and increase in mandated requirements through the Bureau of Labor/OSHA standards, Belgrade sees the need for additional full-time fire and rescue staff. To provide the town with both fire and emergency medical services, there is a need for a modern and efficient centrally located facility. The proposed new station would replace the current Belgrade Depot Station which has outlived its useful life and is barely able to house fire equipment.

Belgrade taxpayers have already demonstrated their support and acknowledged the need for a new fire station by establishing a reserve account and appropriating funds for the past five years. This has allowed the town to search for a suitable location and start with the necessary funds to begin planning for the future safety of the Town of Belgrade.

This is the perfect moment in time and opportunity for the town to address the present and future needs of fire and rescue services for residents and potentially receive federal funding for 75% of the project.

The special town meeting will be held Wednesday, May 22 at 7 p.m. at the Center for All Seasons, 1 Center Drive, Belgrade.
